Our History:

Abeam Health services provides Adult Rehabilitation Mental Health Services (ARMHS) to improve the quality of life of adult individuals living with the challenges of mental health disorder through person center intervention, advocacy, education, and support.

The founder of Abeam Health Services worked in a variety of practice setting as social worker including adult and children’s mental health case management, emergency/crisis intervention, outpatient mental health, and school social work. In every setting she worked, the founder was the only few people of color staff or the only multilingual staff. After working in the social services field about a decade, the founder of Abeam Health services realized the lack of cultural understanding in the mental health care and the need for culturally responsive services.

Abeam Health Services was created from a need that was seen in the community. Abeam Health Services aims to reduce disparities that contribute to mental health care and address culturally specific barriers to services delivery like poverty, language, transportation, and mental health stigma.

Poverty:

Our staff will make appropriate referrals of community resources like food benefits, and housing for the client and their families so the client can focus on their mental health services.

Language:

Currently Abeam Health Services has staff that Speak English, Somali and Amharic and we anticipate hiring staff that are fluent in the language of our clients. We will inquire if interpreter services will be needed at intake, and if necessary, request an interpreter for each session.

Transportation:

Many of our clients lack the financial resources to own a reliable vehicle and using public transportation is difficult with young children. Our staff will assist clients obtain bus-passes, teach them how to utilize public transportation when needed, and assist in identifying other transportation resources. Staff will also remain flexible in scheduling clients during times that work for them and their transportation.

Mental Health Service Stigma:

Due to the mental health stigma, many clients and their families do not have a positive information about mental health and how the mental health system works. We will provide detailed information to client and their families. We will help them understand and educate them what services are available, how they can request and receive them.
